1. General information
This compulsory subject (S1), aims to provide students with an archaeological basis for their training as historians, explaining this science, its techniques and working methods. It is intended that students learn to know, understand and analyse the material elements that human activity has generated in all areas, emphasizing the importance of material remains as a historical source. It seeks that students value the vestiges of the past as an integral part of the cultural historical heritage.
These approaches and objectives are aligned with the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda of the United Nations (2030 Agenda (https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/es/).

2. Learning results
In order to pass this subject, students must demonstrate the following learning results:
Identifies and describes the main historical facts, processes and factors of a society from its archaeological study. Reads and knows the different historiographic currents and interpretations related to the world of archaeological research, assuming that these are in constant evolution.
Critically analyses and interprets archaeological information by comparing it with historiographical documentation. Knows and uses the appropriate technical instruments for the study and treatment of archaeological information.
Knows the archaeological method as well as its techniques applied and used in scientific research and in the professional practice of archaeology.
3. Syllabus
1. Archaeology: concept and evolution of the discipline.
2. Analysis of the main theoretical and methodological currents.
3. Archaeology as a multidisciplinary and timeless science.
4. The archaeological method: from excavation to publication of results.
5. Archaeology and the study of man's environment.
6. Archaeology and the study of human settlements.
7. Urban archaeology.
8. Archaeology and the study of production.
9. Archaeology and Historical Memory.
10. Archaeological remains related to death. Study and interpretation of the vestiges.
11. Archaeology and cultural manifestations.
12. Legislation on archaeological heritage.
4. Academic activities
Theoretical and practical classes, seminars, individual or group work. In accordance with the number of hours assigned to the subject, the lectures given by the teacher and the practical classes carried out with the didactic collections of the Department of Antiquity Sciences will have special relevance. These activities will be complemented by external internships in archaeological sites, external internships in museums, attendance to conferences and seminars related to the content of the program.
5. Assessment system
I. First call
a) Continuous assessment system
1) Practical exercises: These are carried out throughout the term, after explanation of their characteristics, dates and procedure. 30% of the grade.
2) Participation and readings: Participation in seminars organized to complete the academic training. 20% of the grade.
3) Written test that includes the test on the syllabus. Two topics from a triad of three will be developed. 50% of the grade: (25 % each subject).
b) Global assessment test (on the date established in the academic calendar)
Completion of a written test that will cover the different learning results.
The test will consist of two parts:
1) Theoretical part: two topics from which to choose one (60% of the grade): 30 % each topic) and four short questions (20 % of the grade: 5 % each question).
2) Practical part: exercises, text commentaries, etc. (20% of the grade).
II. Second call
Global evaluation test (to be taken on the date established in the academic calendar). The system and criteria of the global evaluation test of the first call are repeated.
In all the sections and calls, clarity, coherence and originality in the approach will be valued, as well as the critical contributions derived from the bibliographical review and the spelling.
